Chapter 33
“Hello everyone.” My ears perk up and I look at the stage. Connor is there, microphone in hand, a smile on his face. He has his public persona on. Confident and not at all nervous as he had seemed in the car.
“Thank you all for coming and opening your wallet. You may know, but in case you don’t, I’m Connor Whitlaw. I’m proud to be the founder of the Whitlaw Foundation. Tonight, we’re hoping to raise over one million dollars to help fight childhood cancer. I alone pledge to meet up to five hundred thousand dollars of donations.” He pauses for applause. “Now this cause is very special to me. Many years ago, I met a young girl named Sarah. Sarah had leukemia. I met her when I did a round through the children’s hospital here in LA. And that meeting stuck with me. So much so, I went back to see her again a few weeks later. But Sarah was gone.” The room is so silent that the stray cough is jarring. “I found her parents and expressed that I wanted to help. And with their support and guidance, we formulated a plan on how to get your dollar into the hands of the people that need it.
